What is BlephEx®? 

BlephEx® is a gentle and precise in-office treatment designed to address the underlying causes of blepharitis and associated dry eye symptoms. Blepharitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the eyelids, which can lead to redness, itching, burning, and a feeling of grittiness in the eyes. It often occurs due to the accumulation of debris, bacteria, and oil along the eyelid margins. 

How does BlephEx® work? 

BlephEx® treatment uses a specialized handpiece with a disposable micro-sponge tip to carefully clean and exfoliate the eyelid margins. The micro-sponge tip rotates at a controlled speed to effectively clean the lid margins without causing any harm to the delicate skin. The treatment is quick and painless and allows us to effectively reduce or alleviate the symptoms of dry eye syndrome and blepharitis. The entire BlephEx® procedure usually takes about 6 to 8 minutes to complete for both eyes. 

After the treatment, our expert optometrist, Dr. Steven Chander, will provide you with post-care instructions, which may include the use of warm compresses and gentle eyelid hygiene practices to maintain the cleanliness of the eyelids. 

What can I expect during and after BlephEx® treatment? 

BlephEx® treatment is well-tolerated by most patients and does not typically cause any significant discomfort. During the procedure, you may feel a gentle tickling or vibrating sensation as the micro-sponge tip moves along the eyelid margins. 

Following the treatment, you may experience temporary eyelid redness or mild sensitivity, which usually resolves within a few hours. It is important to follow the post-care instructions provided by our optometrist to ensure optimal healing and maximize the benefits of the treatment. 

When will I see results? 

Many patients experience immediate relief from dry eye symptoms following BlephEx® treatment. By effectively cleaning and exfoliating the eyelids, BlephEx® helps to remove the sources of inflammation and improve the overall health of the eyelids.
