Contact Lenses

Contact lenses offer a convenient and comfortable alternative to traditional eyeglasses. At Primary Eye Care Associates in South Side Chicago near Midway International Airport, we provide a wide range of contact lens options to suit your unique needs and lifestyle. Our experienced optometrist, Dr. Steven Chander, will help you find the perfect fit and ensure optimal vision correction and eye health.

Benefits of contact lenses

Choosing contact lenses as your vision correction option offers several advantages, including:

  • Natural field of vision: Contact lenses provide a full field of vision without the obstructions that can come with wearing eyeglasses, allowing for a more natural visual experience and improved peripheral awareness.
  • Active lifestyle: Contact lenses are ideal for individuals with active lifestyles or those who engage in sports and physical activities. They offer freedom of movement, do not fog up, and eliminate the risk of eyeglasses falling off or breaking during vigorous activities.
  • Enhanced appearance: Contact lenses provide a more natural appearance without the frames of eyeglasses. They can also be a great option for those who enjoy changing their eye color with colored contact lenses.
  • Flexibility: Depending on your needs, contact lenses can be worn daily or on a flexible schedule, providing the flexibility to adapt to your lifestyle. Daily disposable lenses offer ultimate convenience, eliminating the need for cleaning and maintenance.
  • Prescription options: Contact lenses are available to correct various vision conditions, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Our optometrist will prescribe the appropriate lenses to address your specific vision needs.

Types of contact lenses we offer:

Soft contact lenses

Soft contact lenses are made of soft plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea. They are available in various options, including daily, bi-weekly, and monthly disposables and extended wear lenses.

While soft contact lenses are the most common, they may not be the best option for everyone. If you have keratoconus, dry eye syndrome, or some other condition that prohibits you from wearing traditional contact lenses, we can recommend specialized lenses to address your specific needs

Rigid gas permeable contact lenses

Rigid gas permeable lenses, also known as RGP lenses, are a type of contact lens made from durable, oxygen-permeable materials. Unlike soft contact lenses, which are made from flexible hydrogel or silicone hydrogel, RGP lenses retain their shape on the eye due to their rigid nature.

Due to their rigid composition, RGP lenses are more resistant to tearing and damage compared to soft lenses. They have a longer lifespan and are less prone to deposit buildup, making them easier to clean and maintain. Additionally, RGP lenses can be designed to correct complex refractive errors or irregular corneas, such as those caused by keratoconus or post-corneal surgery.

Since RGB lenses have better stability on the eye compared to soft lenses, they can be ideal for athletes, as the lenses are less likely to move or shift during movement. While RGP lenses may require an initial adjustment period, most users find them comfortable once they adapt.

Toric contact lenses

Toric contact lenses are a type of specialized contact lens designed to correct astigmatism. Astigmatism is a common refractive error that occurs when the cornea or lens of the eye has an irregular shape, resulting in blurred or distorted vision. These contact lenses have one horizontal power and one vertical power, and there’s a weight at the bottom so that they remain centered on the eyes.

Cosmetic contact lenses

Cosmetic contact lenses, also known as colored or decorative contact lenses, are specially designed lenses that allow you to change or enhance the appearance of your eyes. These lenses are available both with and without vision correction, making them a popular choice for individuals who want to alter the color or appearance of their eyes for cosmetic purposes. It’s essential to have a comprehensive eye exam and professional fitting for cosmetic lenses, even if they are non-prescription, to maintain optimal eye health and safety.

Scleral contact lenses

Scleral lenses have a larger diameter than traditional contact lenses. They vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye), creating a tear-filled reservoir between the lens and the cornea that provides continuous hydration and increased comfort.  Scleral contact lenses essentially replace the irregularly shaped cornea with a perfectly smooth optical surface to correct vision problems caused by keratoconus, a high amount of astigmatism, and other corneal irregularities. Since scleral contact lenses rest on the sclera, which is a less sensitive part of the eye, they can also be more comfortable for people who have dry eye disease.

Prosthetic contact lenses

Prosthetic lenses help to restore a natural and balanced appearance to eyes affected by conditions such as coloboma, aniridia, albinism, or traumatic injuries. They can also be used to mask scars or other corneal irregularities. Each prosthetic lens is carefully crafted to match the color, pattern, and details of your natural eye, ensuring a seamless blend and realistic appearance.

Hybrid contact lenses

In addition to hard and soft contact lenses, we also offer innovative hybrid contact lenses by SynergEyes®. Hybrid contact lenses combine the benefits of both soft and rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, offering exceptional visual clarity and comfort. Hybrid lenses are an excellent choice for individuals with corneal irregularities, such as keratoconus or post-surgical complications, as they provide a smooth optical surface that compensates for corneal irregularities while maintaining the comfort of a soft lens.

Multifocal contact lenses

Multifocal contact lenses are a popular option for individuals who experience presbyopia, a common age-related condition that affects near vision. Multifocal lenses incorporate multiple prescriptions within a single lens, allowing you to see clearly at near, intermediate, and far distances without switching between different eyewear.

Monovision contact lenses

Monovision lenses offer a unique solution for individuals with presbyopia, the age-related decline in near vision that typically begins around the age of 40. Monovision lenses work by correcting one eye for distance vision and the other eye for near vision. This allows you to see clearly at different distances without the need for bifocals or progressive lenses.

Orthokeratology contact lenses

Orthokeratology, commonly known as ortho-k, is a non-surgical vision correction method that involves wearing specially designed contact lenses to temporarily reshape the cornea and improve vision. Ortho-k lenses gently reshape the cornea while you sleep, allowing you to enjoy clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses. This makes ortho-k an attractive alternative to LASIK for those who are not suitable candidates for surgery or prefer a reversible option.

Ortho-k has also been shown to slow down the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children and teenagers, making it an effective method for managing myopia and reducing the risk of future eye complications.
