What should you expect during a comprehensive eye exam?

A comprehensive eye exam is much more than a simple vision check. Using the latest technology, our optometrist, Dr. Steven Chander, can detect early signs of eye diseases and other medical conditions, often before you have symptoms. While tests may vary based on your eye health and risk factors, comprehensive eye exams at our office in Chicago typically include:

Visual field testing
A visual field test determines if you have blind spots or peripheral vision issues. Dr. Chander uses the Heru VR headset for visual field testing to create an immersive and engaging experience for our patients in the Chicago area.

Refraction assessment
A refraction assessment determines your eyeglass prescription by measuring how your eyes focus light. Our optometrist will use a digital phoropter or an automated refractor to identify the lens power needed to correct your vision.

Eye health evaluation
Dr. Chander will carefully examine the internal and external structures of your eyes using specialized equipment, such as a slit lamp biomicroscope and an ophthalmoscope. This allows him to detect any signs of eye conditions or diseases, such as glaucoma, cataracts, or retinal disorders.

Pupil dilation
In some cases, our optometrist may recommend dilating your pupils to obtain a more comprehensive view of your retina and optic nerve. This process involves administering eye drops that temporarily enlarge your pupils, allowing for a more thorough examination.

Intraocular pressure measurement
Increased intraocular pressure is a key indicator of glaucoma. Dr. Chander may use a tonometer or a non-contact tonometer to measure the pressure within your eyes.

Additional tests
Depending on your specific needs and any symptoms you may have, our eye doctor in Chicago may conduct additional tests. These could include corneal topography to map the curvature of your cornea, a meibography test to diagnose and monitor dry eye disease, or an optical coherence tomography (OCT) scan to obtain detailed images of the retina.

Discussion and treatment plan
After your tests, Dr. Chander will go over the results with you. He will address any concerns you may have and develop a personalized treatment plan based on the findings. This may involve prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, vision therapy, medical treatment, or a referral to a specialist for further evaluation or treatment.

Your exam at Primary Eye Care Associates may take up to an hour, depending on the number and complexity of tests required to fully examine your eyes. All the tests in a comprehensive eye exam are painless, and our doctor will clearly explain each test before performing them.

What are the benefits of a comprehensive eye exam?

During your eye exam at Primary Eye Care Associates in Chicago, you will receive immediate feedback about your eye health. Your eye doctor will test for a range of issues, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, focusing problems, other vision problems, and eye diseases.

If any vision issues are detected during the exam, Dr. Chander will work closely with you to develop a customized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. This may include prescribing eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct refractive errors, improving your visual acuity and overall comfort. He will also provide valuable information and guidance regarding your vision and eye health, helping you make informed decisions about your visual well-being.

One of the most important benefits of comprehensive eye exams is they can detect eye diseases in their early stages. Some eye diseases happen so gradually that patients may not notice symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred. By regularly scheduling eye exams, we can detect these diseases early, enabling timely intervention and treatment to prevent further vision loss and irreversible damage.
