Corneal Mapping
At Primary Eye Care Associates in Chicago, we use state-of-the-art corneal mapping technology to provide accurate and detailed measurements of the cornea’s surface. This advanced diagnostic tool allows our optometrist, Dr. Steven Chander, to detect and monitor various ocular conditions and provide customized solutions for vision correction.
What is corneal mapping?
Corneal mapping, also known as corneal topography, is a non-invasive imaging technique that creates a detailed map of the curvature and elevation of the cornea. This information helps us evaluate the overall health of your eyes, detect irregularities in the cornea’s shape, and monitor changes over time.
The cornea is responsible for most of the eye’s focusing power. Any irregularities in the shape of the cornea can lead to distortions in vision. With a corneal topography scan, our optometrist can identify irregularities or distortions in the cornea.
What is corneal topography used for?
Our eye doctor may recommend a corneal topography scan for several different reasons:
- Diagnosing and monitoring ocular conditions: Corneal topography can detect and monitor various corneal abnormalities and diseases, such as keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, and corneal scarring. It enables early intervention and appropriate treatment for these conditions.
- Contact lens fitting: Corneal topography is crucial for fitting specialty contact lenses, like scleral lenses, rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, and hybrid lenses. The detailed corneal map ensures optimal fit, comfort, and vision correction for patients with irregular corneas or specific visual needs.
- Planning for refractive surgery: Corneal topography is used during the preoperative evaluation for refractive surgeries, such as LASIK and PRK. It helps in determining the patient’s eligibility for the procedure and assists in planning the surgery for optimal outcomes.
- Post-surgical monitoring: Corneal topography is used to evaluate the results of corneal surgeries, such as LASIK, PRK, and corneal transplants. It helps in identifying any complications or irregularities after surgery, ensuring proper healing and vision correction.
What to expect when getting a corneal topography scan
Getting a corneal topography scan is non-invasive and painless. Nothing touches your eyes at any time. Dr. Chander will ask you to sit in front of the corneal topographer and stare at a fixed target inside the machine while pictures of your eyes are taken. The scan only takes a few seconds to complete.
